Why do I get the feeling that the current education system is designed for students who existed a few hundred years ago? Each and every individual is expected to have basic knowledge about science, history, geography, mathematics and other related subjects. Why? Why is it that specialization takes place only after the individual has spent more than 10 to 15 years studying general subjects? How many individuals have actually applied the mathematical formulas that they learned in school?

Considering the fact that modern education does not incorporate new trends, the overall consequences of the current system are even more embarrassing. We were asked to memorize huge volumes of information because we were told that there would never be a time when we would have all the information we need at our finger tips. Today, it is possible to carry an entire library in a device that can fit in our pockets. So, why on earth did we spend so much time memorizing stuff?

Yes, it is not possible to anticipate the future developments. However, if one analyzes the trends that have been existing for the past 2 to 3 centuries, then the brightest minds in the business could have easily come up with an education system that balances old and new developments. The funny thing is that a lawyer who is in charge of settings spinal cord injury claim cases will spend 5 to 10 years of his life reading about mathematics, geographic, geology and other such unnecessary details.

What is the harm in creating a system where the individual has the choice of reading this stuff after he or she is certain that it will be useful in the future life? What irritates me is that all this is a huge waste of time, effort and resources. We end up utilizing very little of what we have studied in school.

It is amazing to think of the diversity of sub cultures alive and thriving around us all the time. I recently got lost in Stoke on Trent and came across one of the oddest places that I have ever seen. It was a traditional ski chalet built next to a dry ski slope. You walked in and there were the traditional benches where people would sit and put on skis and a bar, all kitted out in wood panelling that served things like mulled wine and hot chocolate. The thing is, there was not a flake of snow in sight and it was 21 degrees out! There was no need to wear ski jackets or anything of the sort, but the skiers were wearing all of the kit.

It gets a bit weirder. I stopped for a lovely glass of mulled wine and ended up having a long conversation with the owner about chaos theory. What does chaos theory have to do with dry slope skiing? It seemed perfectly reasonable at the time, something about how it needed to be designed without any order to appear random and replicate nature. At this point I was on my second mug of wine so it wasn’t very clear. I was left wondering why on earth the people of England have embraced things like skiing and snowboarding when there are no mountains and not a regular amount of snow?

Watch the video above with the cute French kids in their winter snow suits and you understand in a country with the Alps that everybody would embrace the love of the sport from a young age. Perhaps I am being a bit of a euro sceptic, maybe the whole point is that we are closer to Europe and its brilliant slopes and snowy winters, than I feel in the cold winter rain of Northern England.

If you run around the street shouting your political ideals at everyone, chances are you will be arrested fairly promptly and thrown into the back of a Police car. You may even be charged with inciting racism or hatred. Chances are that the authorities will deem you a big enough threat that they will at least want to question you and find out what on Earth you needed to do that for. When you leave the Police station, your face will be remembered in the local community and that is a fact.

The BBC website, on the other hand? Well, you could say anything goes…

when it comes to serious matters, BBC, I really think you need to watch what you put out

Recently – probably over the last couple of years more than anything – I have noticed an alarming trend which shows no signs of slowing down soon: people commenting on the BBC website in a way which really isn’t fair, and doesn’t deserve to be there. Often it’ll be people spouting their own opinion in an aggressive way – which I agree they are entitled to to a certain extent – but sometimes it’ll be someone actively encouraging crime or sympathizing with some awful act. The big question here has to be: how come the editors let these comments go through when all these people are trying to do is incite violence or their kind of negative thinking? After all, it’s fair to say that they wouldn’t be allowed in any other medium, truth be told.

One recent angry comment was answered by someone who called himself The commercial estate agent . He replied with a hilarious discourse on the angry-person’s-argument, in this case about a story concerning sea gulls in Bournemouth which had taken to attacking people walking along the sea-front. What happened next was a to-and-fro between the two people, with the words being used getting more and more unsettling. Again, none of this looked to be moderated. My personal theory is that the BBC were enjoying reading all this just as much as the numerous other people across the UK and world.

In the case of weird and wonderful stories being commented on, I’m personally all for it. It livens my day up and puts a whopping great smile upon my face. But when it comes to serious matters, BBC, I really think you need to watch what you put out there. Just because someone chooses to sound off and be offensive doesn’t mean that we all have to have it thrust upon us, does it?

For more on a different angle of the censorship debate, see the video below.

What happens if you put an egg in a microwave? (Don’t do that). All these weird and wacky questions seem to haunt some of us. But here’s another one for you.

What is weird?

Who defines what weird is? Is it simply the norm within society? If that is the case then we are all “weird” to most of the world. Does it just cover the bizarre, stuff we don’t see or hear to often? Or is it just plain stupid? If you’re reading this thinking I’m going to answer that question then you would be wrong. How am I supposed to know?!

I knew that to write here, I would have to sift through all my weird memories and pick the perfect one. Trouble was there were too many, and none that came to mind were good enough! Little “gangster” kid face planting on the floor, random people shouting “bah bah bah bah bah” on the street, or a baby swearing at his mum. Then I saw a video on YouTube. “Is it a Good Idea to Microwave a Microwave?” Immediately it dawned on me. These boys from The States had made it so clear to me.

Everyone is weird.

I don’t know why it took two unfortunate microwaves to show me this, but it did. Every single day I do something weird. In fact yesterday I jacked up a lighter to the point where it - anyway, it was weird.

Have you read that book where a computer identifies 42 as the answer to the question of life? Well, what if this is true? What if we are living for something that can be answered using the number 42? Anybody who says that he or she was not interested in finding the question hidden inside the brain of the protagonist is lying. Would it not be wonderful if we realized why we are on this planet? Why do we have to get up in the morning and get to work? Why do I have to write this and why do you have to read this?

Once we discover the truth, we can use shredders to destroy all other useless information and enjoy life by doing whatever we want. Of course, we would still want to earn lots of money and would be miserable in the process but will at least have the freedom often doing so out of our own choice.

With the answer as 42, one can come up with numerous questions that may range from the number of roads that we ought to travel before we will find eternal peace to the number of girls one must check out before finding the most beautiful person in life. Everything can be answered using the number 42.

For now, we can have a lot of fun trying to arrive at the question. Of course, we don’t have the computer to confirm whether we have got the question right but computers use artificial intelligence and can be ignored any his. How would this sound - How many computers should be built before we find the eternal question? Maybe 42.

The other day, while surfing the web, me and my friend came across something I honestly didn’t know existed. Something so obscure – at least, to me – and frightening that I almost don’t dare type it in written words. But I am going to anyway, I have to, I need to share this. Get it off my chest before I have to think about it anymore.

If you are squeamish, or easily offended, I suggest you look away now. I mean REALLY LOOK AWAY NOW.

The web-site was about the split-penis body modification process. And by split-penis, I mean as if someone had put it on a block and taken a machete to it LENGTHWAYS.

Still here? Hold on…please, if you can…

Now, according to my research, this procedure is supposed to provide heightened sexual pleasure for the man. That’s right, a penis cut in half…no thanks. That is most definitely not for me…

But what was even more shocking was the number of people who have had it done. There are dozens of people out there who have gone through this. To be honest, chances are that if you’ve walked around central London recently looking for School Management Jobs or whatever, you may even have passed one of these people. And as we all know the statistics don’t lie.

Scary stuff indeed.

If this is making you think about having your own willy split in two, all I can say is good luck…and be aware that what’s done is done…

There’s a lot of talk about how dangerous the Internet can be: the indecent images and videos, the bomb-making tutorials and all the instructional and educational stuff – usually on things which you’d never be able to find a library book on. But if you ask me it’s the services on finding out information on people that are the most suspicious. For example, did you know that there are services you can use, which cost very little, where you can gain access to someone’s mobile phone and see where they are at any given time? It’s absolutely true and in the click of just a few buttons you could be tracking someone wherever they go. It works internationally too, in case you were wondering. Oh, and it’s completely legal, which means that if your phone does get hacked then there is very little you can actually do about it.

This is a pretty scary thought. Although you have to have physical access to someone’s phone to set this up, I’m sure that for many people that wouldn’t be too difficult. In a work situation it’d be easy in fact. How does that make you feel about having a work mobile now?

It’s true that you can get carried away, though. The tattoo removal cost you saw yesterday being twice as high today because you’re on a different web-site, and it making you panic, is a fine example.

All I know is that I shall be keeping an eye on my phone from now on!

Once upon a time, having a dolphin – a very badly drawn, and wholly inaccurate dolphin, I might add – inked onto some part of your body was considered a hilariously bad thing to do. People laughed at you, called you names, probably didn’t invite you first for drinks after work. Then along came the Internet and suddenly, out of nowhere, having a bad tattoo made you one of many: a source of amusement. Now, along with fellow badly tattooed individuals, you can upload your bad tattoos onto a web-site or create your own. The funny thing? Everyone loves looking at a bad tattoo, and they will visit the web-site. In fact, the worse it is – hello everyone with a forehead tattoo – the more people will flock to see it.

And so we arrive at a very strange time in the history of our civilization. We arrive at a time when actually, having a bad tattoo is bad in the same way as a guilty-pleasure film we all secretly love to watch.

You have to ask yourself: what happened?

A quick search online will put paid to any hopes you had that bad tattoos were going away, or even beginning to fade slightly. Now, thanks to the Internet and its curious ability to make people want things – from carte r4i to moisturiser they don’t need to dogs with no legs and dogs with too many legs – you too could be thinking about getting a bad tattoo in mere minutes.

But please, I’m begging you, don’t.

Ever found yourself at the crocodile enclosure at the zoo staring at the crocs thinking “I want a tail like that! With all those funny knobbly bits, cool!” Then you’ve just found your calling (as well as teh circus, which I’m quite sure would be pleased to have you). Over at the following link you’ll find some really very weird stuff that will be right up your street. If I were you, though, I wouldn’t tell your partner about this site. Not unless you want them to run a mile…

http://www.oddee.com/item_97551.aspx

Personally even I’m a bit freaked out, and that’s saying something…I’ve spent more time than is probably safe cruising around the internet looking at very odd stuff…

Me? I don’t really get the attraction with sticking pokemon balls under your skin, or making your face look just like the cat’s next door, but still, to each his or her own is what I say.

Then again, you think it’s weird, but how can it be weird when it’s been commonplace with certain tribes for thousands – if not millions – of years? I bet that if you asked a tribal member what they thought of making your breasts bigger, they’d give you a very funny look. Either that or they’d rally all their lot together, get a big old pot out and boil you there and then. Then eat you up with vegetables!

And don’t be thinking it’s just the alternative kids who are doing this kind of thing, because you’d be sorely mistaken. In fact, it’s the adults too. I know one guy who works at the local it support company who is planning on having shark fins implanted into his hips because he loves sharks that much. That’s fine, but I’d hate to see him in his swimming costume, wouldn’t you?

Are you so bored you are actually searching on google for home laser hair removal with real interest, hoping to find photos of where it’s gone horribly wrong? Or maybe you’re so bored that you’re reading words over and over again and now they just seem, hmm, weird? Either way, even someone as bored and freaked out as you should be able to find something interesting over at the following website: http://crystalinks.com/weirdweather.html

Yes, it’s about weird weather: much more interesting than you’d initially think. In fact I advise having a look at it and seeing if the photos jog your memory of seeing any unusual weather yourself.

My obsession with weird weather began, excuse the massive cliché, one stormy night in the 1980s…

I was sitting looking out the window, watching because it was raining very hard and also thundering a lot. The kind of thunder that sounds like someone with a massive steel drum is banging it right against your ear.

After fifteen minutes I was rewarded: an enormous fork of fork lightning, obviously, struck a tree in the distance, splitting it in two. I got the window undone just in time to hear the sound of the tree trunk splitting in two (OK, I am exaggerating slightly. It didn’t actually make that loud a sound, I just wanted it to).

The next day I was thrilled to discover that the tree belonged to a woman in our village who I really didn’t like! It was a fantastic day and one I had been waiting for for many years to no avail. I’m not sure if there’s any weirdness about fork lightning on the aforementioned website, but looking at the amount of weird stuff on there, I’d be surprised If there wasn’t.
